As in the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature 18.5, Leguminosae is an older, but still valid name for Fabaceae.
When the Papilionaceae are regarded as a family distinct from the remainder of the Leguminosae, the name Papilionaceae is conserved against Leguminosae.
The cDNA analysis of the chloroplast matK gene revealed that three classes, Caesalpiniaceae (ca. 2250 species), Mimosaceae (ca. 3270 species), and Papilionaceae (ca. 13800 species) are of monophyletic lineage.
