- Nicotiana tabacum
- コロンブスおよびアメリカス ベスプッチが中南米インディアンの風習であるタバコを発見、1500年代初頭にヨーロッパに広まる。日本には天正年間(1573-92)に渡来。葉に含まれるニコチンは1809年にVauquelinによって分離されたが、実際に精製されたのは1828年(PosseltとReiman)。ヒトの場合、体重1 kgあたり1-4 mgで中毒症状（硬直性の痙攣と呼吸停止）を引き起こす。紙巻タバコ1本に含まれるニコチン量は16-24 mg。 [原産]中南米 出典:Glennon RA "Nicotine and Pain" Medicinal Chemistry Research, 13(1-2), 74-77, 2004; 毒と薬の世界史 船山信次 中公新書(2008)
