- Nicotiana tabacum
- コロンブスおよびアメリカス ベスプッチが中南米インディアンの風習であるタバコを発見、1500年代初頭にヨーロッパに広まる。日本には天正年間(1573-92)に渡来。葉に含まれるニコチンは1809年にVauquelinによって分離されたが、実際に精製されたのは1828年(PosseltとReiman)。ヒトの場合、体重1 kgあたり1-4 mgで中毒症状（硬直性の痙攣と呼吸停止）を引き起こす。紙巻タバコ1本に含まれるニコチン量は16-24 mg。 [原産]中南米 出典:Glennon RA "Nicotine and Pain" Medicinal Chemistry Research, 13(1-2), 74-77, 2004; 毒と薬の世界史 船山信次 中公新書(2008)

- Nicotiana L.
- ナス科 【属名】ニコティアナ;タバコ属 tobacco; wild tobacco; nicotiana オーストラリア・ポリネシア・南北アメリカに約100種が分布する。一年草・多年草、ときに低木。葉は互生し全縁。花は頂生の円錐花序または総状花序につき、筒形の5弁花。タバコの原料として、各地で栽培され、観賞用にもされる。

- ナス科 シュッコンタバコ;ジャスミンタバコ jasmine tobacco; sweet tobacco; tobacco plant; flowering tobacco ブラジル南部産。粘ついた粗大な多年草。葉は卵状楕円形で長さ12～30cm。花筒は長さ6～12cmになり、花冠が広がる。花色は白色・クリーム・桃・深紅・紫紅色など。

- ナス科 キダチタバコ tree tobacco; yellow tree tobacco; Don Juan; mustard tree 半常緑の低木。葉は幅の狭い卵形多肉質で青灰色。夏～初秋、筒形で明るい黄色の派手な花が咲く。

- ナス科 マルバタバコ;ルスチカタバコ tobacco; Aztec tobacco; nicotine tobacco; Turkish tobacco; Indian tobacco; wild tobacco; Midewiwan sacred tobacco N.paniculataとN.undulataとの自然雑種が生じ、続いて染色体が倍加して起源された4倍体種。ペルー・ボリビアの高地産。花は緑白色。

- ナス科 オーストラリア・タバコ Australian tobacco オーストラリア産の一年草。高さ30～60cm。花は下向きにつき、緑を帯びた紫紅色で、内側は白色。純白色もある。夜間に芳香を出す。
