園芸種はPetunia x hybridaでイギリスで初めに改良、日本には江戸時代後期に入る。ツクバネアサガオという名前は、花が朝顔に萼が羽根突きの羽に似ることから。栽培のコツは雨に当てないことと伸びた茎を切りもどす摘花摘芯作業。サフィニアはサントリーがペチュニアを改良した登録商標。香気成分は安息香酸メチル、ベンズアルデヒド等の芳香族化合物(テルペン系ではない)。

- ナス科 【属名】ペツニア;ペチュニア;ツクバネアサガオ属 petunia 南米に33種、メキシコに2種が分布する。全株に粘毛がある一年草または多年草。
- ナス科 ラージホワイトペツニア large white prtunua 株全体に粘毛がある。花は上部の葉腋に単生し、クリーム白色の漏斗状で、夜間に芳香を放つ。
- ナス科 ペチュニア common garden petunia
