細胞内の代謝物を網羅的に解析しようとする学問分野を「メタボロミクス」と呼び、その対象である全代謝物を「メタボローム」と呼びます。遺伝子の総体を研究するゲノミクス、タンパク質の総体を研究するプロテオミクスに続く、第三のオミクスとも言われますが、DNAやアミノ酸、ペプチドも代謝物であることから、メタボロミクスは全てを包括する概念です。

What is Metabolomics?

Metabolomics is a research field to investigate the entire small molecules within cells. By definition, it includes analysis of oligosaccharides, oligopeptides, lipids, and nucleic acids. The analysis target, all metabolites, is called metabolome. Some say the field is the 3rd omics that follows genomics for all genes and proteomics for all proteins. However, metabolomics is a larger concept, including (small) peptides and nucleic acids. To elucidate the metabolome, we need to fully exercise various extraction- and measurement technologies.
