It was first isolated by Peligot in 1841. Its name comes from Uranus (Greek goddess of astronomy). In ancient Rome, pitchblende was used to stain glass into rich yellow. Its mass is 18.9, almost as heavy as gold (19.3). It has 16 radioactive isotopes, and 238U yeilds plutonium (239Pu).
