Constituent(s) unripe fruit: papain (papayotin) sugar pectin acids; leaf: carposide (glucoside) carpaine (alkaloid); seed: caricin (which resembles sinigrin and which on hydrolysis yields a volatile pungent body with an odour like oil of mustard) acids resin Action leaf: used as a substitute for Folia Digitalis in heart diseases; seed: vermifuge emmenagogue (can cause abortion.). Ripe fruit: wholesome. Papain which is prepared from the juice of the unripe fruit is digestive and hepatic and administered where albuminoid substances pass away undigested and which has much the same effect as trypsin and pepsin
