Catechins refer to a subgroup of Flavan 3-ol derivatives (FL63AC). In a stricter sense, it means (+)-Catechin and its stereoisomer (-)-Epicatechin.
Flavan 3,4-diol is called leucoanthocyanidin meaning a precursor (white state) of (colored) anthocyan. The term was first used by Rosenheim in 1920. Leuco comes from the Greek word λευκός (leukos) meaning white.
