==What is Metabolomics?==

''Metabolomics'' is a research field to investigate the entire small molecules within cells.  By definition, it includes analysis of oligosaccharides, oligopeptides, lipids, and nucleic acids. The analysis target, all metabolites, is called ''metabolome''. Some say the field is the 3rd omics that follows genomics for all genes and proteomics for all proteins. However, metabolomics is a larger concept, including (small) peptides and nucleic acids. To elucidate the metabolome, we need to fully exercise various extraction- and measurement technologies.

細胞内の代謝物を網羅的に解析しようとする学問分野を「メタボロミクス」と呼びます。定義上、オリゴ糖やオリゴペプチド、脂質や核酸も含みます。それらの対象(全ての代謝物)を「メタボローム」と呼びます。遺伝子の総体を研究するゲノミクス、タンパク質の総体を研究するプロテオミクスに続く、第三のオミクスとも言われますが、DNAやアミノ酸、ペプチドも代謝物であることから、メタボロミクスはより幅広い概念です。その全容を知るには様々な抽出法や計測技術を駆使しなくてはなりません。
